aka Blackthorn, Sloe Plum

Dense, prickly, plant with new shoots becoming smooth by winter. Masses of snow white blossom-like flowers appear in September before the leaves, followed by sloes which turn from purple to black in autumn. Will thrive in most conditions including poor soil. Makes an attractive hedge.

Fruit of Prunus Spinosa is called Sloe .. mix with gin to make the liquour "Sloe Gin".
